In 2023, 58 women were murdered in Spain as a result of gender-based violence, the highest number in the past decade. Far from being an isolated event, these killings are part of an ongoing historical continuity: since 2003, 1,245 victims have been officially recorded, revealing a persistent structural violence.

That same year, 36,582 women were officially recognized as victims in legal proceedings, and 199,166 reports were filed, placing these feminicides within a much broader context of abuse, threats, and control. Many of the murdered women had previously reported their aggressors, had protection measures in place, or were living with them, highlighting the limitations of institutional mechanisms.

This book takes 2023 as its axis to create a space for memory and recognition. Through images synthetically generated from real photographs, it proposes a symbolic representation of the victims, removed from harm and placed in a state of rest.

Each copy incorporates hand-made monotypes created directly onto its pages using wild plants gathered by the artist. The process unfolds slowly over time —requiring several months for each copy—, making every book a unique piece shaped by the specific moment and environment in which it was produced. This intervention introduces a material and singular dimension that reinforces the irrepeatable nature of each life, shifting the project from statistical record toward a sensory experience.

Each of these lives was violently interrupted. Remembering them is an act of memory and responsibility. As long as these deaths continue to occur, it remains necessary to name them and demand that they do not happen again.
